How to Print Using lpr

How to print using lpr differs depending on which OS you are using. Here are the steps involved for Windows 2000 and Windows XP:

Windows 2000

  1. First, you will need to install Other Network File and Print Services if it is not already installed
    1. Right click My Network Places and select Properties
    2. Click Advanced -> Optional Networking Components
    3. Select Other Network File and Print Services
    4. Click Next
    5. connect to larry(see connecting to hopper)
    6. get the files it asks for from \\larry\applications\w2k\i386
  2. Click Start -> Settings -> Printers
  3. Double click Add Printer
  4. Click Next
  5. Select Local Printer
  6. Uncheck Automatically Detect and Install my Plug and Play Printer
  7. Click Next
  8. Select Create New Port
  9. Select LPR Port
  10. Click Next
  11. Type larry.csee.ogi.edu in the first box
  12. In the second box, type the name of the printer being added, example: cse-lj2
  13. Click Ok
  14. Click Next
  15. Choose a postscript driver to match the printer you're adding
  16. One of two things can happen at this point:
  17. Click Next
  18. Type a name for the printer in the Name box(example: My cse-lj2 Printer) and decide whether it should be your default printer
  19. Click Next
  20. Choose the option Do Not Share This Printer
  21. Click Next
  22. Select Yes to print a test page
  23. Click Next

Windows XP

  1. Click Start -> Settings -> Printers and Faxes
  2. Click the Add a Printer button on the top left
  3. Click Next
  4. Select "A network printer..."
  5. Click Next
  6. Select "Connect to this printer..."
  7. Type \\larry.cse.ogi.edu\name-of-the-printer in the box
  8. Click Next
  9. Choose if you want this to be the default printer
  10. Click Next
  11. Click Finish
