login to the UNIX system
type: vncserver
The first output line from vncserver will look like this:
New 'login.csee.ogi.edu:## (username)' desktop is login.csee.ogi.edu:##"##" will be a number referring to your VNC session "screen". You will need this number to set up the VNC viewer and ssh tunneling.
The first time you setup a vncserver for your account you will be asked for a password. This should be a brand new password that you make up on the spot DO NOT USE YOUR ACCOUNT LOGIN OR EMAIL PASSWORD. Make a new password to be used only for VNC connections.
To reset your VNC password run this command: /usr/bin/vncpasswd
Configure a new session for putty on your local system.
Call it something like "vnc remote desktop - login.csee.ogi.edu". Enter login.csee.ogi.edu in the "Host Name (or IP address)" field.
In the SSH/Tunnels area enter the port number in the "Source Port" box.
The port number will be 5900 + ## (where ## is the VNC session "screen" number from above).
For example if ##=2 then your port number will be 5902, if ##=45 then the port number will be 5945.
After hitting the "Add" button the "Forwarded Ports" box should look like this (with ## replaced by your screen number):
Return to the "Session" area and SAVE THE SESSION.
You can now open the session and you should get a login window. Use your regular account password to login and establish the ssh tunnel.
Start your VNC viewer program and instead of connecting to login.csee.ogi.edu:## you will connect to 127.0.0.1:## (where ## is your VNC screen number from above). VNC viewer should ask for a password...this is your special VNC password that you created when you set up the vncserver the first time. You should now have a remote desktop from the server.
