The threat of email virueses has not gone away nor will it in the forseeable future. To help mitigate the danger, the CSEE mailserver has a built-in virus scanner that checks every email for known infections. If one is detected. you will recieve a message similar to the following:
V I R U S A L E R T
Our mail server detected a virus in an e-mail addressed to you.
It was sent on "Fri, 30 Aug 2002 14:47:32 -0700" apparently
from "Someone U. Know <someone_you_know@real.nice.computer.com>"
with a return-path address of "<someone@hacked.computer.com>"
and a subject of "Sorry I did not get back to you last week".
If you receive a virus alert message please don't panic. Your computer
is probably not infected. The infected computer most likely at
hacked.computer.com sent you a copy of itself and placed an email address
selected from the address book of the infected computer into the
FROM: field as the sender. This may be an address of someone
that you know.
Still, new virsuses are continually being written and one could always be created that will slip by the mail scanner. In the past, viruses have been written to take advantage of holes in Microsft products because they enjoy such wide use. Using an alternate email program like Mozilla Thunderbird may help you avoid infection.
And as always it is best to keep your anti-virus software up to date.
